Item: Weston Acoustics Tranquility 6L6 Push Pull
Location: Melbourne
Item Condition: as new
Reason for selling: Got carried away and now have too many amps
Price:*SOLD*
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, EFT
Extra Info: 3 years 8 months of warranty left for the new owner

I bought this amp on eBay about a month ago because I had an urge to try some valves with my new Zingalis. It's a gorgeous sounding (and looking!) amp, but I am trying to free up some funds to upgrade other, weaker links in my system.
I'm selling at the same price I bought a month ago

Tubes are: Tungsol 6L6 X 4, Sovtek 6SL7X3 and Cetron 5u4gX2 Rectifiers

The badge on the back of the amp incorrectly states it as a Time Machine 300B, so it's bound to be a collector's item one day!

Edited by Whatmore, 05 January 2011 - 12:28 PM.

regards, Trevor

Great starter amp for those wanting to get into valve amplification. A chance to get one off the rack rather than being subjected to a 6 month waiting build period!

Trev,
this amp should 'fly' out the door.
I did see this one sell and there were many who were keen to get it...you must have beat them to the punch!

I have one of Earle's amps which he custom made to order for a fellow in Tassie.

It will run: KT88...KT66...EL34...6L6GC valves and is switchable
Includes: 2 x 5R4 or 5U4 rectifiers...3 x 6SN7 or 6SL7 valves.

This amp sounded very nice...but I changed the coupling caps with NOS Russian 0.22uF 1000v caps and the sound improvement was 'unbeleiveable'.

You will not have any problem finding a buyer for yours.

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen these comments in the for sale column, I'd be a wealthy man. B)

Anyway, good luck with the sale, I'm sorely tempted myself, knowing the amount of work which goes into one of Earle's amps, however the only problem is the last thing I need is another amp.

Hey Orph,

if you did buy it then my statement would be true...Ha Ha!!

And you may already 'be' a wealthy man for all we know...:)

Also with this amp having "300B" on the back plate I feel was a bit of a 'slip' from the great man...Earle...coz it's not a "300B" amplifier...it's a "Tranquility" 6L6 amp...quite a different there.

Just the same...an excellent option for anyone getting into valve hi fi and very nice sounding too...good value at that price IMO!

This is certainly a 6L6 Tranquility, not a 300B
As I mentioned, when Earle gets the worldwide fame he deserves this little 'slip' will make the amp quite a rare collectors item

True...he will be forgiven this one small slip on the 6L6 amp.

Maybe he meant to say something like this...

"When I grow up I want to be a 300B"

Done, thanks for the tip
And as everyone can see, you get some great support from Earle for all of his products. Try getting that level of service for an overseas made product

Hey,

this amp is for...6L6GC tubes..

If I am correct, wouldn't it also take as a 'direct replacement' the...EL34 tubes as well??

Maybe best to confirm this with Earle Weston first?

Gives it a bit more scope for some 'tube-rolling' later.

Cheers...Vanch...:D

I had actually asked Earle something similar already. This was his response (hope you don't mind being quoted, Earle :) )

No need to bias the tubes, the amplifier is self biasing Makes it easy for tube rolling.

You can run any 6L6gc tubes in it. The 6L6 must have the "gc" designation as the plain 6L6, and 6L6g are only rated to 370 volts. The gc are rated to 500 volts and the Tranquility runs at 430 volts.

Now, just to confuse things, the new re-issue Tung-sol 6L6G are rated to 500V, they are the only 6L6G to my knowledge that are rated to 500V, so they are okay to use.

The amplifier will also run EL34 type tubes, but the output transformers are wound for 6L6gc tubes (higher impedance) so running 6L6gc results in better sonic performance.
You can run KT66 output tubes as they are almost rated identical to 6L6gc.

regards, Trevor

I have a similar amp to this, I can say that the new issue KT66 Gold Lions sound fantastic on them. I would say that the 6L6G's sound a little 'cleaner', over the KT66's, but the KT66's have a better balanced sound to my ears. Also, running some really good 6SN7's from TJ's/Sophia's IMO are a step up from the TungSol 6SN7GTB's.. Also, using good NOS 5U4G's with this combo, just sweetens the whole package.

Just thought I would mention, I have a lovely hand made cover for the Tranquility with fretted brass Treble Clefs either end, very useful if you have inquisitive visitors, of course it has to be removed to run the amp. Am going to list it shortly in the For Sale Section, any interest ?

shogo,

which NOS 5U4G rectifiers did you use? I currently have the Russian rectifiers in mine.

Thanks...Vanch

I took the amp around to a friend's place last night as he wanted a listen with his speakers.
Dynaudio Confidence C1 rated at, I think 85db.
Did the Tranquility have a problem? Not on your life. Maybe the 500w Wired4Sound had better grip on the bass, but boy did the midrange and top end sound sweet

Wh@more,

two things may happen:

a) what shogo33 said;

OR

:) someone sitting at home on holidays who is bored 'sh.tless' and nearly going out of his mind....has been paid a healthy Xmas bonus and needs a 'hi-fi fix' really badly...is wondering where he (or she) is going to find that little piece of Christmas magic to brighten their dull and music-less existence......

and then

c) they look on Ebay...they see this gleaming, shining, sparkling vision....your Earle Weston glowing like that star those 3 wise men followed many many years ago....you know? Then he/she reaches ever so gently for the "BUY IT RIGHT NOW>>>DO NOT PASS GO" button, and then, KABOOOM!!!! It's SOLD mate, gone, done, gone to God, she's otta there, hit for a 6!!!

Anyway, it's just an opinion...everyones got one hey??

Go on man....Do It!!! Do It!!! Do It!!!!!

Only if you want to though...:hiccup

Got back from holidays yesterday and fired the amp up.
I must say it sounded beautiful. And those tubes glowing..... lovely.

Someone please make me an offer before I let this beauty go to some random ebayer (actually I find it a real pain selling on ebay, much rather do it here )
