Some may know that I had some computer problems and forum member peterpan (Peter) offered to have a look at it. Well after a few weeks of some canceling on my part I was finally able to catch up with Peter so he could have a look at the computer and to have a little listen to his 2 channel set-up.
I was really looking forward to hearing his set up because we both have VAF speakers, Rotel Amp and CA CD players.
Well it took Peter about 5 minutes to hook up another PSU to my computer and prove that it was this that was my computer problem. We left it running while we went into his listening room for a listen - with a cold can of Coopers Mild each of course. :P
I said we have the same brand gear, but Peters is a bit different to my VAF and ROTEL.
The Rotel is a monster of a power amp that puts my little 150w to shame and his VAF's are the new 1-93's, you wiill agree a different species altogether than my DCX's:o
This was the first listen to the 1-93's in a domestic set-up and I took my standard GTG CD's along for a listen. Etta James singing 'At Last' has a few little thumps in the recording (hitting the microphone stand I think) that the DCX's pick up quite well, so I was listening for those to start with. did I say little thumps? Well these thumps were like a whack to the back off the head through this VAF- Rotel set-up. Holy crap what a difference. This has to be the most Dynamic, clean and powerful bass I have ever heard and I have heard a few good system lately. We also played 'Fever' from the Mikey Fremer unprocessed CD that some have and what a joy that was with studio ambience and 'air' to die for.
I won't go on, but I must tell; As soon as I got home I put the 'Fever' track on and for the first time after hearing someone elses system I felt like my set-up had lost it's charm - still I know what to aim for now.
Thanks peterpan for supplying the PSU for the computer and fixing it and he wouldn't charge for it ; And thanks for giving me one of the best music treats I've ever had.
Oh! and the STAX Headphone thingy was amazing.
SNA - another great moment

Well done Peter and thanks for the story Grumps. Sounds like Peter's system is very good indeed. You mentioned 'Fever' and I was just wondering which version Fremer has on his CD? I have Elvis Presley's version circa 1960 and it is just sensational.

Cheers,

Keith

Peggy Lees Keith; you could have reached out and touched her . Yes I would say the system is the most dynamic sounding set up I have heard so far.

Have you heard the 1960 Elvis version mate? I'll have to hunt down the Peggy Lee version now.

Yes I would say the system is the most dynamic sounding set up I have heard so far

Now that is saying something mate, considering some of the systems over there that I know you've been in front of. Might have to try and line up a listen in the New Year.

Cheers,

Keith

Like I said Keith I'd say it's the most dynamic and the best bass I've heard; not sure if it's the best overall that i've heard, but it has to be up there.
I've heard the 1-93's at VAF's, but never like this.
Sorry Peter I did say i wouldn't over do it.

i would think those I-93's would sound awesome in a smaller space. The VAF showroom is just such a huge room to fill that i dont think anything sounds the way it would at home

so are you going to have a set of I-93's at your place anytime soon Grumps?

Great story, Grumps & well done PP.

Grumps, if Peterpan had come to your place, would he have flown in the window?

No, I think it was a Rotel pre. bluedog

its a rotel rsp1069 processor but used in bypass mode, and does sound quite ok even tho a more dedicated 2 ch pre might be better. i have to add that the vafs are in a slightly too small room ( 4x4m) and dont really image as well as i think they can and can get a bit overpowering in the bottom end on some music but overall very happy with them. the next step is to try and get some serious bass traps happening but im still trying to find the best ( cheap and easy ) solution to try to get the sound a bit more even.

Hi grumpy what pre was peter pan using still his denon 4308 ?

there is another member called peter pan on here who joined recently who i think has a denon? mine is spelled peterpan one word.
anyway thanks for your glowing report grumpy, was a pleasure to help out and share a bit of my hobby with a fellow member, thanks for the beer and that cd was amazing quality im loving listening to it mate!
you are welcome back anytime.

Peterpan to the rescue again. I was looking for a rsp1069 for a while and was so happy to find one in the forum. Had such a smooth transaction and have it in my hot little hands right now. And its as good as he said. At first I wasn't sure about purchasing through the forum but after some PM's you soon realize what these members are like. That is extremely helpful and fairdinkum hifi enthusiasts. It's been nice chatting with you peter. And thanks for your help
