I am not, generally, one for street art or grafitti. Most of today's graffiti is, to my mind, ridiculous scribble placed in inappropriate places by mindless vandals. However, a reclusive British graffiti artist, Banksy seems somewhat different. He has been the subject of a recent movie (which he didn't go to) and his art can sell for $250,000. Most dealers have never met him.

Here are some examples:

I like this stuff. It brightens up some dreary buildings and gives me a little chuckle.:P

What do you guys think about it?

I really like his art and it does brighten up boring buildings. I don't have a great problem with graffiti, then again when next door built an extension which included a 4.5m long wall we just got some teenagers around to graffiti it, so we have some in our back yard. Maybe we could get Banksy over for a cuppa and some music. I think we can and should encourage this sort of art: skilled, well executed and with interesting messages. Maybe we should have an opt out system where all walls can be graffitied unless the owner says no. The owner also reserving the right to remove anything from the wall.

I like the general idea, but I see one problem - who adjudicates what is "skilled, well executed and with interesting messages". Perhaps we get back to the age old question - what is art?

It would be nice to have lots of Banksy style art around, though.:P

And David, it would wanna be a great cuppa to lure Banksy out of his seclusion. You might need to throw in a plate of Tic Tocs :P

Thanks Minty - glad you liked 'em. I found them refreshing and quite clever. I suppose they took me back to the era when graffiti was actually readable and witty.

Apparently not everyone in Melbourne enjoys Banksy's art. There has been a bit of a furore over one of his few works in Hosier Lane being painted over by the Melbourne City council.

P.S I am still reading about those bloody Seatons :P

David, I think that you are missing the whole point about graffiti. You want there to be rules. The whole point of graffiti is that it is against any rule.

Shows you are just another fuddy duddy (like me) who wants to control something that is in its conception uncontrolled.

thumbs up to Banksy, what's not to like.

as to graffiti in general, it like most expression, including music, ultimately subjective. also like most expression I like the minority rather than the majority.

but the property rights issue is a discussion I am not sure of my standpoint on.

In our current society property rights exist whether we like it or not. So, yeah, you end up with rules and ultimately the owner of said wall will end up with the right to remove any graffiti. Now, if only we could run society without property rights . . . I'm allowed to dream.

Interesting story, Jake, and one that raises an interesting question - do you own the space once you have painted some art (or what you believe is art) on there?:D Like the overall question of graffiti being placed on private and public property, for me at least, the answer is not crystal clear. Just becasue I have a preference for say, Banksy, does other artists work become more easily disposable in my mind?

That's what I like about his art,thrash099, it makes you think, regardless of whether you agree with his underlying social commentaries. And many of them make you laugh, which, in this highly stressed society, can't be a bad thing.

banksy also pulled a stunt years ago in uk record shops where he replaced paris hiltons cd with his own remixes that he gave titles such as 'why am i famous' and 'what am i for' etc. he also changed the sleeve to a topless photo of her with a dogs head.

Stormie has also done work around parts of Subiaco, they just appear in the oddest places on buildings and doors, here and there.

My 17yo son is studying art as one of his electives for year 12.

Banksy is a bit of a hero of his.

My sons medium for his portfolio is stencil art, of which he's quite talented

we had a major event late last year in Sydney which I went to.

http://outpost.cocka...re-artists.html

Outpost Project 2011

"Sydney Harbour Federation Trust presented The OUTPOST PROJECT (4 November - 11 December 2011) and transformed the gritty industrial spaces of Cockatoo Island into an explosion of urban art featuring over 150 artists, in a first for the Southern Hemisphere.
Renowned international and local artists such us ROA (Belgium), Ethos (Brazil), Kid Zoom (USA/Australia), Anthony Lister (USA/Australia) and the Everfresh Collective (Australia) illuminated the island with large-scale installations, live art creations including aerosol art, stencilling, paste-ups, sticker art, cup rocking, sculpture, murals and billboards.
Exhibitions and forums immersed visitors into global street art culture. Must-sees included George Shaw's Oi You! Collection boasting works by Os Gemeos, Swoon, Faile and the world's best known and most influential Street Artist Banksy.
"

best photos are on flickr, this is one guys shots

It's all an experiment !

ying and yang perhaps.,....2 of my fav rappers either way :)

i love street art as much as i love the stuff hanging on gallery walls, i grew up with it and connect with it on many levels. I dont care for tagging etc... but the well thought out designs by the likes of Dmote, Kem, Unique, Banksy and Umph etc.... have always floated my boat...and i guess they always will.
The more I learn the less I know.

This is an old thread and I have only just seen it so I will restrict myself to commenting on Banksy.. No one knows if he is a person or a collective. He has been in the news recently because one of his "art works" in Melbourne was destroyed when some plumbers were putting in some new toilets. They drilled right through the "art piece" and when a horrified observer advised them that they had just destroyed a "Banksy", they gave a classic response "What's a Banksy"? I found it quite ironic as "Banksy" did not ask permission to adorn the wall in the first place so I guess it could be called vandalism and in turn his work was vandalised. Obviously most graffiti is meant to be ephemeral so it was a suitable ending. C "est la vie!

An experience that can only be had at the time and can't be transferred..................as much as some might try.

It's like people on youtube posting................best concert eva!!!!.................and uploading a clip from their phone.

A great collection of street art from around the world. The thing i like about street art is it has the ability to change a degraded urban landscape to something thought provoking, humorous or uplifting.

It is an expression of creativity onto everyday objects/places which is something you would expect music lovers to appreciate.

There was an interesting program I think on SBS or maybe the ABC about Banksy. The upshot was that he had copied his signature works, rats, cloaked woman etc from a French stencil artist Blek le Rat who was much more talented. These works were originally political statements.

That is great stuff. Genuinely creative street art which enhances the urban landscape. Love the sense of humour in it too.

That is in total contrast to the sort of mindless grafitti we see far too much of these days. Stupid scribbly tags, and in-yer-face aggressive looking spray painted murals which take no account of the environment they are in and actually degrades the landscape.

There is some hope though. Some time ago, somebody started posting large black and white portraits of people on the sides of buildings in the Adelaide CBD. Apparently, they were enlargements of police mugshots taken in the 1920s and 1930s. Usually they were posted up in laneways, so that you came across them unexpectedly. I remember seeing them around the place, and found the whole thing rather intriguing. Who were these people, and what was this all about? Those questions were never really answered and they are all gone now. They were either defaced by people or removed by the city council, but this what the artist had expected. I know one could argue about the morals and legalities of somebody doing this, but nevertheless I think they added a little bit of interest and mystery to an otherwise rather mundane landscape.

That sounds interesting, definitely intriguing.

The fact that graffiti is impermanent really adds to the relevance of it as an artform imo, it is a statement relevant to the time and place and before long it is often removed. That is the problem with the new mainstream and commercialised status of guys like Banksy, his works are now so valuable that people rarely remove them and the discussion is as much about its value than its meaning.

Which means that the actual value of the work is diminished.
