SNS members and guests are invited to a get together to experience much of the new VAF range of Loudspeakers, SoundWall and powered subwoofers.

The three Adelaide get togethers have been well attended so while we are in Sydney setting up more VAF SoundWall reference sites we thought we'd take a bit more gear along with us, and some drinks & nibbles, and put on a bit of a show for fellow SNA members and guests.

We are looking forward to getting to know a few more of the Sydney members along with giving a few more folks in Sydney the opportunity to hear these loudspeakers close up and personal.

Date:
21 April 2010 : 4pm - 8pm

Venue:
Stockman Room, Aspire Hotel Sydney, 383-389 Bulwara Road, Ultimo NSW, 2007

On demo will be:
SoundWall, MK2 Signature I-93 in stereo (find out why the Adelaide SNA members loved them), DC-X G4MKII in stereo, DC-7 G4MKII in stereo, DC-3 Universal Speaker in Stereo etc etc, and we are crossing our fingers for two or three new surprises too ;)

Drinks and nibbles are complimentary, good music welcome, and please RSVP via PM.

With my kind regards to all,
Philip Vafiadis

Hi Phil,
Looking forward to this GTG, appreciate u putting on a gtg for sydney folks.

In auditioning speakers, u dont always get to sit in the sweetspot...fair suck of the sauce bottle as Kev 07 might say...

I was wondering if u might share with us some of the newer aspects/changes u made to the i-93, for example u use a different tweeter to the original excel(?) tweeter?
Is it this that responsible for the bigger sweet spot?? or the foam treatments aroud the tweeter...(i also appreciate that u may not want to divulge ur commercial ip)

one of the interesting (and enjoyable) aspects of the Adelaide get-together was to wander around the room, completely away from the sweet spot and to see how good the sound experience was. ven getting across to the side wall, and perhaps up to the speaker edge, but to the side.

IIRC, Phillip and the VAF team have worked hard at getting the dispersion sorted from the bass, mid-range and tweeters so that the sound quality does not diminish as you move away from the sweet spot, and over to what would normally be a tweeter null spot.

I will be interested to hear the views of those more technically knowledgeable on this.

Hi Steve, the following are some notes that are cut/paste from preliminary info just to provide some preliminary info without keeping you waiting. On the two specific questions you asked, I'll respond shortly when head above water. There is a lot in the design though so if you have more detailed questions I'd be happy to respond specifically.

-----

The original Signature I-93 was acclaimed as the best loudspeaker many reviewers had heard, and the best in the world by some. As good as they were, the new MK2 is a large step forward in almost every regard.

What you will hear:

Bass
MK1 - Rolling Stone said "the best bass in the world"
MK2 - Bass is better damped again and quite noticeably tighter

Detail
MK1 - Australian Hi-Fi said: "they gave its owner a better perspective of the performance than the producers of that performance".
MK2 - The ability to extract fine detail across the range is clear. The difference at midrange and higher frequencies is profound.

Imaging / Sound staging
MK1 - Rolling Stone said: "The ultimate in high fidelity performance"
MK2 - Stand up and the image rises with you, move forward and back and the image stays consistent, move from side to side and the image does not collapse - this capability has never before been encountered by VAF in any other loudspeakers - the ability of these speakers to portray three dimensions is simply spectacularly good.

Dispersion
MK1 - A tight listening window for ideal results.
MK2 - Amazingly wide and even dispersion across all frequency ranges. This ensures greater tolerance to room acoustics as the proportion of bass, midrange and treble in the reflected sound that is heard is more consistent with the proportion of bass, midrange and treble in the direct sound. Additionally, together with the improvements in imaging allow a much larger area in the room to hear audiophile grade sound.

Amplifier Matching
MK1 - Stable 3 ohm load varying less than 1 ohm across most of the frequency range with impedance at bass resonance extremely well controlled rising to only 12 and 13 ohms. Needed high current amplifiers. As the impedance variation across the frequency range was small this made them ideal for use with high output impedance amplifiers like SET Valve types as well as high current solid state amplifiers.
MK2 - Extremely easy electrical load dropping to about 4 ohms at its very lowest point making them an easy load for almost all contemporary amplifiers. The difference between the nominal impedance and the bass resonance peaks are even tighter than before so the new MK2 are even a better fit for SET Valve amplifiers or almost any contemporary solid state amplifier.

What has changed:

Cabinet
As heavily braced as the MK1 was the MK2 has almost 2 meters more in length of internal bracing panels in each cabinet. These are not just to make the incredibly inert MK1 cabinets more inert, but are divide into three separate areas inside the cabinet to trap energy from the rear of the woofers in a way in which much less returns to the rear of the woofer to re-radiate into the room. The result is much cleaner sound and faster and more even decay (they stop making sound faster)

Woofer
Already modified in the MK1, the MK2 makes further improvements. This along with revised porting and the inclusion of port damping refine further what was already acclaimed as the best bass in the world by Rolling Stone.

Tweeter
Possibly the most accurate transducer made. Six individual rare earth magnets drive an incredibly finely engineered magnesium diaphragm which is suspended on an oversized synthetic roll surround. This delivers the rare goal of pure pistonic motion with no breakup in the audio band, along with unusually low resonance frequency and very long diaphragm stroke to faithfully transcribe every sound in the audio band it is called on to deliver. Unusually, every potential resonant cavity behind is ventilated and damped.

Baffle
Extremely detailed and elaborate diffraction treatments provide unparalleled reduction of diffraction along with making a beautiful and striking visual feature - form truly follows function.

Crossover
More substantial yet more elegant. Extremely low resistance 1% tolerance resin bound air cored inductors along with close tolerance self healing polypropylene capacitors etc characterise the exceptional quality of these loudspeakers. The unusual typology impacts every area of performance from time domain, to bass, mid and treble balance and decay. As before it is configured for single/bi/tri-wire or single/bi/tri -amp use.

Signature I-93MK2cc Centre Speaker Version
A perfectly matched cc version is available with identical performance and matching finishes.

Thanks to all who PM that they are coming. I should have said post on the forum as opposed to saying PM me, to keep everyone here in the loop together - apologies.

So far so good though - looks like it will be a great day.

I also want to make sure as far as is possible that everyone who comes gets what they are looking for. Any questions are welcome whether about the speakers on show, or the industry, or on design, or on room acoustics, whatever - I started VAF as a hobby 32 years ago and it is still a hobby for me, and I'm happy to share what I've learned over the years.

Any special requests?

The 21st is coming along soon. Darren & I are making final arrangements now - ouch this stuff is big, and we are bringing it all the way to show SNA members in Sydney at this Get-to-gether - apologies if we are still puffing when you guys turn up!

Can everyone confirm if they are coming so we can prepare accordingly?

I confirm that we will be bring the following with us all the way from our base in Adelaide to this GTG in Sydney:

Large SoundWall for Stereo & Surround
MK2 Signature I-93 in Stereo
Signature I-91 in Stereo
DC-X G4 MKII in Stereo
DC-7 G4 MKII in Stereo
DC-3 Universal Speaker in Stereo
MPB SW4 Powered Subwoofers

All the gear will be live for demonstration so please feel free to bring good music to try out, or you'll be stuck with whatever I bring.

I'm also open to any questions at all on VAF, on the industry, on speaker design, acoustics, whatever - so please dig deep and ask - if you just want to listen to some of my speakers that's fine too - but if you are curious about how this industry works and how this gear we all love works then please do share thoughts and ask questions.

Cheers to all, and hope to meet a few of you Sydney siders soon - cameras are welcome too - if we are lucky we might have two new things we are working on with us too, worst case is that we'll have photo's of our own to share about these new goodies. One is the new smaller Signature Series loudspeaker that we announced elsewhere on SNA, the other is another very sophisticated if unusual subwoofer...

GTG details as follows:

Date:
Wednesday 21 April 2010 : 4pm - 8pm

Venue:
Stockman Room, Aspire Hotel Sydney, 383-389 Bulwara Road, Ultimo NSW, 2007

Great to see you lugging all this gear up Phil, I'm sure the boys will appreciate the effort you've gone to.................roadshows are such damned hard work (and costly).
If I can juggle the schedule and get away from here I might come along to say G'day and chew the fat with you.

Hmmm, I know your state government over there works at lightning speed but that might be a little ambitious before next Wednesday. The good news is we chose a location in Ultimo just in behind Darling Harbour so hopefully everyone will find it ok.

20% offer on VAF Loudspeakers to coincide with Sydney GTG
VAF showcase in Sydney on Wednesday 21st April

We have launched new Mk2 versions of our famous Signature Series following the MkII upgrade of our acclaimed DC-Series. We’ve also launched new subwoofers that have received instant recognition being voted the best on the market regardless of price. The Mk2 Signature loudspeakers have achieved performance we have never experienced in any other loudspeakers. In particular you can sit off centre, forward or back, stand or sit, and still get a profound soundstage and full range sound. Whether for stereo or home theatre this improves the experience for everyone in a listening room. Also, Rolling Stone said that the Mk1 had the “Best bass in the world”, and the Mk2 are even better!

I want to offer you the opportunity to order any new VAF loudspeaker or subwoofer at 20% off (excluding SoundWall), and to spread the word about these wonderful loudspeakers. This offer expires Saturday 14th May so be quick so as not to miss out.

As usual, and to make sure we only sell you the most appropriate loudspeakers for your needs we will be available on FreeCall 1800 818 882 or vaf@vaf.com.au to discus which models best suit your particular home theatre, stereo or whole of home audio system. We are also happy to recommend any other equipment you may need to complete your system from whatever brand.

We do want more SNA members to get acquainted with these new models and I do hope this special 20% offer gives you that opportunity. It is open to all SNA members whether in Sydney or not.

If you happen to be in Sydney on Wednesday 21st April, we are holding a VAF showcase and you are welcome to attend – you can place orders on the day too.

Date:
21 April 2010 : 4pm - 8pm

Venue:
Stockman Room, Aspire Hotel Sydney, 383-389 Bulwara Road, Ultimo NSW, 2007

On demo will be:
SoundWall, MK2 Signature I-93 in stereo (find out why the Adelaide SNA members loved them), DC-X G4MKII in stereo, DC-7 G4MKII in stereo, DC-3 Universal Speaker in Stereo etc etc

Drinks and nibbles are complimentary, good music welcome.

RSVP to vaf@vaf.com.au

4-8 was to acomodate city folks before heading home and also to allow time for those folks who live out of city to head in after work.

There is carparking on site next driveway past the hotel, and the walk from Darling Harbour is not too long.

Well we survived the Adelaide earthquake and got into Sydney this morning - unboxing and setting up now. Tomorrow is industry & Press and I'm looking forward to meeting some of you Sydney members/guests Wednesday afternoon/evening!

It's a big room so there's plenty of room if you still want to come.

You forgot to pick me up Philip!!!!!
