Well it's finally happened- the first ever NTGTG!:party

Big thanks to the good Dr (X that is) for opening his home (AMAZINGLY neat for a bachelor pad may I say:D) and allowing the likes of me to experience what the 21st century has to offer. Onya mate!

I was quite surprised that the BIG REDS were not as imposing as I expected, totalling about a metre high only, but with a sublime black 2 pack style finish. A neat touch is the non rigid grille that leaves a clean face when removed- no locator pins or holes.

Initially I took in the contender, a Rotel RP2500 and got it all level and comfy on a small hardwood table and, at the Docs' suggestion, plopped on Dire Straits- Brothers in Arms. He was suitably impressed and, as he has a MF recording of the same ripped to hard drive we were able to do a very basic AB comparo. The MF certainly had the edge in overall volume and was definitely a VERY good recording, but our little vinyl terrier took the fight right up there, giving what was unanimously agreed to be a "warmer" and less "crisp" sound overall. Even though the DEQX unit was digitising the analogue signal before doing all of its' "stuff". I found it very interesting (though not surprising) that there was such a noticable difference- but neither of us found one better than the other, just different, which is what I expected. Soon after Alan arrived on the scene to warm welcomes. From there it was a mishmash of jazz, metal, trance, punk, bluesy rock, new agey stuff and a little classical. The volume was cranked and the Legends provided all of it with aplomb.

I found their sound to be bright but in no way harsh, extremely detailed and with taut, strong bass- very much a great all rounder. We also briefly sampled the delights of blueray and the Doc showed me and explained well all of the ins and outs of the DEQX system, which in a word is remarkable. Way beyond my ability to understand!:nana

After a handful of ales, 4 and a half hours of music and general banter it was time to pack up and move off into the sunset, with plans for another event once the Bear Cave is complete!

Thanks again Doc for the invite- a really great, informative and fun arvo!

PS- forgot the camera so a couple of dodgy phone pics is all I have in the way of proof:nana

Thanks Bear for the above report and it sounds like you all had a great afternoon. Good on the Doc for providing the venue and I hope you can organise many more. I was up in Darwin only briefly about a week and half ago and I thought about trying to contact some NT SNAers but time would have been against it. If the tendered work comes off in Katherin than I'll definitely be in touch and hopefully get a listen to those Big Reds!:party

Cheers,

Keith

Thanks Bear and Alan for stopping by! Bear's turntable and vinyl sounded very good. Very hard to fault especially on some of the new vinyl. Bring on the next GTG at the Bear pad!

Cheekyboy...next time your coming into town, let Bear and I'll know and we'll make a day of it.

Cheers.

Not exactly, although it was unfortunately fairly close- I didn't perceive any issues with vibration though so didn't get myself too concerned.

No problem- it's actually a pleasure to be able to report on an event from the North for a change!

Also forgot to add that Doc borrowed me a few DVD-As to check out as my collection is dismally small. Big thanks for that too! Only popped in one so far (Stone Temple Pilots) and haven't had a focussed listen yet but it did sound really bloody good!

Just like to say thanks to Dr.X for hosting the inaugural NT SNA GTG last Sunday. Finally I got to hear and see a Squeezebox in action and the DEQX. :D

Also it was a chance to listen to Bear72's T/T and some gems of LPs he picked up for a song. Lucky boy.

One thing I can say is the NT hospitality is nice and casual and really laid back. Just the way I like it. And of course you appreciate the warmer climate which beats the hell out of being down south at the moment. Just stepped off the plane back in Perth this morning and the cool 10 degrees was a full scale assault to the system. I was pretty much tempted to cancel the week back home and head back to the sunshine.

While on the subject of NT hospitality, a big thanks to Bear72 and his lovely Em for having me over to dinner on Tuesday evening. Very pleasant indeed and a great opportunity to catch up again. Thanks guys. ;)

Cheers,
Alan R.

Well done DrX for hosting this and making it happen
