1st single about 71/72 with my own money, The Hollies Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress.
1974 1st Album with my own money Skyhooks Living in the 70's What I liked about Skyhooks is they were unashamedly Australian and sung about Australian streets and suburbs, it still gets a run after I've had a few .
Question were you a sharpie or a rocker ?

Still got my original Mountains on vinyl, plus the quite reasonable reissue from several years ago.Still sounds absolutely unique. Also have a vinyl of the Mississippi album - some tracks a little dated,, but boy, you can hear what was to burst into vintage LRB a year or so later.
You have inspired me to dig them our for next w/ e.
Dingo.
Unique is indeed the word Dingo. I clearly remember hearing Mountains when it was first released and even during those days of continual musical revelations, it was special.
I am not sure if you have seen this site or anyone else, but it is a great site for exploring Oz music

Skyhooks, Living in the Seventies.
Which was preceded by the daggy soundtrack of
Paint Your Wagon.
But I did record some Gary Glitter and Alvin Stardust from the radio onto casette.

Afraid of Sunlight, and Seasons End still do the 'shiver factor' for me all these years later.
Just a thought, don' t you think Afraid of Sunlight should have been chosen as the playout music for the movie NEAR DARK?

But I must say putting Johnny Farnham's One (is the loneliest number) and Jimi Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower on the same LP is a mistake in any language....

Batty, you fill my heart with joy to hear another Marillion afficionado stand up and declare their allegiance. I have managed to collect all the official stuff, and are now working my way through the fanclub live reissues, and the double albums of the bootcamp weekends. They are fantastic sets. I love both vocalists, with perhaps a whisker of extra applause for Mr. Hogarth. Afraid of Sunlight, and Seasons End still do the 'shiver factor' for me all these years later. Just a thought, don' t you think Afraid of Sunlight should have been chosen as the playout music for the movie NEAR DARK? Just another Holloway girl, Dingo.

First 45: I think it was Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran
First LP: Duane Eddy - Rebel Rouser??
First Jazz LP: Dave Brubeck - Time Out
First Cassette: Santana - Caravanserai
First CD: Probably the 1977 version of Karajan's Beethoven 9
First "Pop" CD: Simon & Garfunkle - Bridge Over Troubled Water. It was a crap mastering and I've never been able to find a CD of this that wasn't crap.

The unanimous findings were as follows.
original Aussie vinyl - reasonable cut, fair to good sound. 6/10
original CD - rather flat, two dimensional, but clear. 6/10
CBS Mastersound Audiophile Pressing (1980?) Half-speed mastered vinyl.
Three-dimensional sound, masses of air, timbral delineation between voices, realistic guitar, good dynamic range. 9/10
Columbia SBM Legacy Edition (year????) I suspect the same generation master as previous vinyl. 8 1/2 /10.
Old Friends SET (1997 issue) Very listenable over entire set. 8/10
Reissue 2011 CD - atrocious. compressed, flat smeared sound, bleeding between instruments. little timbral difference between voices, no dynamic range at all. unlistenable after the Vinyl or the Old Friends set. 2/10
So, to ebay it is Brumby, a look for the vinyl 1/2 speed or the Gold SBM.
hope this is of some assistance, Dingo.

However, when I became (as I thought then) "into good music", I purchased two albums with Christmas money... Status Quo's "Hello" and Yes' "Tales from Topographic Oceans". Sublime to the ridiculous, perhaps.... Still love 'em both, though. :-D

First album that I requested as a birthday present (aged 10) -

First album traded for a model airplane 6 months later - see above.
1978 - thrashed my sisters copy of Kate Bush's The Kick inside
First single with own pocket money - Vapours, Turning Japanese. B52s Rock Lobster/6060842 predated this but I taped it off a mates copy.
First gig was some crappy school bands that I didn't even like, they were boring long haired 70s Aus rock influenced - old school rock music played by young kids. It had none of the fun or artiness that I thought was cool.
First Album (cassette) - UK Squeeze, Cool for Cats

First album bought as a Xmas present, Polydor Sample Bag which came with a calico shoulder bag with a Hendrix pix. One of my daughters still has the bag, and I still have the LP. Looking back on the track listing I wonder how much that influenced my love of music as it is a mighty fine list.
Layla (DEREK AND THE DOMINOS)/Rolling Home (ASHTON GARDNER AND DYKE)/Mandrill (MANDRILL)/Stay Awhile (BELLS)/Wave Myself Goodbye (RORY GALLAGHER)/Black Sheep (CHRIS FARLOWE)/Freedom (JIMI HENDRIX)/Mad Dogs And Englishmen (STONE THE CROWS)/Brother People (ELLIOTT RANDALL)/Big Nick (TONY WILLIAMS LIFETIME)/After Midnight (ERIC CLAPTON)/Toast And Marmalade For Tea (TIN TIN)/Feel So Good Part 1 (TASTE)/Prisons In The Road (JOHN MAYALL)/Standing In The Rain (GALADRIEL)/The Pickpocket (TEN WHEEL DRIVE with GENYA RAVAN)/So Close (JACK HOLMES)/Fire And Rain (BOBBY GOSH)/Rattle My Snake (TED NUGENT AND THE AMBOY DUKES)/Substitute (WHO)/Naturally (FAT MATTRESS)/Things We Like (JACK BRUCE)/Lawdy Mama (CREAM)/I Believe In Everything (JOHN ENTWISTLE)/ Something In The Air (THUNDERCLAP NEWMAN)/All Along The Watchtower (JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE)
First album I purchased myself. Pink Floyd Meddle.
First gig - it was either Stevie Wright or Billy Thorpe at the Phillip Court Hotel in Goulburn. I cant remember which one was first but i do remember my very conservative parents actually allowing me to sneak into the pub under age (it was easier back then). The Thorpie gig came with your full on pub brawl as well the renowned ear splitting loudness.
Reading back over that it explains a lot. And one of the best bits about this audio hobby is to now listening to that old music on great gear. Those albums that we played over and over that have just been impregnated into our brain, how f...ing good do they now sound when you can hear every little intricacy. It is like an update to my audio memory banks.
Btw - special kudos to High Five and having an 8 track. One of my mates elder brother had one, and I always longed for one. Maybe I should jump onto flea bay.
TT- Garrard 301, Thomas Schick arm, Ortofon SPU Classic GM II E or Denon 103R, Leben RS 30EQ + Auditorium A23 SUT,
CD - Resolution Audio Opus 21 with GNSC mods,
Digital - just dabbling via a 2012 Mac Mini -> Firestone Red Key -> RA Opus21
Headphones- Grado SR325, Graham Slee Solo,
Speakers - Eclipse TD712z MkII/ Quad ESL57s

The LP from memory was Mi-sex Graffidi Crimes, thats the pressing that included Computor Games as a 45RPM single.
I've still got it and still love it.
Other LP's I bought that year
"The Wall',
"The Rose",
"Damn the Torpedoes",
"Eat to the Beat",
"Discovery",
"No Exit",
I'm Not like Everybody Else" and "Back to the Egg". The latter didn't get played much and I found out latter that David Gilmour did play guitar on parts of this LP.

I would love to have seen Billy Thorpe in his 'heyday'.
I have always admired him (for some reason even though I hadn't seen him play), but he just seemed to be a 'real' and genuine, give everything performer!
I did get to see him support Deep Purple, and just recently read 2 of his books, which got me curious as too his back catalogue. He 'really' does go full-tilt when he plays and I wish there were more artists like him around.
And he was a very underrated guitar player!

First 45: I think it was Hound Dog by you know who when I was still at school. This was followed by most of the Bill Haley releases much to my parents distaste! (lost my whole collection of 45s and extended plays together with a prized LP of Chuck Berry and Leadbelly jamming in Germany [no tracks and no singing!] when someone stole the box from Lae airport in PNG in the mid sixties)
First LP: Duane Eddy - Rebel Rouser
First CD:John Williams guitar - can't remember the title but it's still there in the collection
I do have a Sgt Peppers LP given to my ex-wife when she was working in Weybridge in Surrey where the Beatles lived when they released it (she worked in the Kodak shop at the time and they did all the Beatles' photos) - BUT - she didn't get it signed !!!!!!! It's till in the collection but a bit worn now.
