Over a few glasses of red tonight Brisso57 suggested a project that might be a bit of fun. Build a rough and ready BIB in a day, not only that! but build 3, 4 or 5 of them with different drivers.

Now these boxes are dead simple, I have the table, circular and drop saws but in the time we couldn’t do glue joints so quick dry butt screw joints “there-and-then” most difficult thing is cutting the driver openings but I have routers/jigs and bits for that.

So I can throw in a pair of CSS FR126’s, Brisso57 a small pair of 4” drivers we need 2 or 3 more people with WR or FR drivers to make this a fun day.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about have a look at this site, you’d need to come along with drivers and dimensions ready to do the build – many hands make light work ….

oh, and there was another thread about backloaded horns recently where ehtcom recommended a 4" wideband driver from altronics that apparently isn't too bad - perhaps you can add that one to the mix as an underdog

If it would assist a potential attendee, I have a pair of Magnavox 8WR's in very good condition. I'd be happy to sell these for $10 on the day.
You'll need to do your own research re the appropriate BIB dimensions though.

(The 8WR's have a great tone, but need a supertweeter to add a bit of sparkle. I suggest adding a piezo, cap and L-pad to give adjustable sparkle.)

I have a pair of "Holey Basket" Sony/Coral FE103A's that I'll build for. As an alternate I'll also bring along a pair of Sanyo "FE103A's".

It only needs someone with a table saw and a bit of undercover working space. I'm sure there must be SOMEONE who could put their hand up ...
Maybe it could happen on the same day as the Brisbane event.

This sounds like a fun day. Provided I'm in Brisbane I'm keen. There's a chance I could be in Sydney around this time but won't know for sure until the boss gets back from holidays in a couple of weeks.

Hi Steven - I’m quite happy to order in sheets of MDF to be dropped off to me by my supplier and this’d be about $36 per sheet of 18mm board (but let me confirm the price later?). Alternatively, I can get in some sheets of “seconds” ply but obviously the quality will vary and to be honest it’d cost (almost) as much as the MDF. If you want me to order in the materials let me know how many sheets you’ll need of your BIB – remember to allow for the cock-up factor – we’ll be moving pretty fast to get these knocked up.

The whole idea to start from scratch, so I’m going to say it’d be a bit of a cheat to pre-cut before the day. If we got a lot of people involved then yes that may be necessary but I don’t think we’ll be queuing too much for the table saw.

I know you’ve got a heap of driver but non are full range which drivers were you thinking of using.

I’ll organise materials etc once we know we have a definite day and people have had time to decide on their drivers and BIB solution and I’d ask those coming to prepare a dimensioned cutting schedule just to back this up. Also if we go down this route I’ll ask for prepayment of these materials, just in case people don’t turn up! I don’t want to be out of pocket. But if you want to cart your own materials over that’s fine with me.

I’ve also got another little design comment about the BIB’s but I’m staving so that’ll have to wait for an hour or two while I have dinner.

18mm MDF would be fine. I guess a sheet each to allow for stuff ups?

Now I’ve eaten I can think straight again.

I had noticed a couple of comments on diyAudio about the restricted space behind the driver in the BIB. And when you think about it – roughly you have half the depth of the cabinet cut diagonally by the internal baffle. Which very roughly gives you less than a quarter of the cab depth for the driver – yikes that’s tight.

Now I’m going to use the CSS FR125 driver which is 75 mm deep front-back. I’ve just done a rough drawing of the specified BIB for this and it look like I have around 77-80 mm space (tight hey).

Now I was wondering why most of the pictures on Godzillas site http://www.zillaspeak.com/bib-pics.asp had some form of suprabaffle – now the large ones I can understand but those silly little ones less than the width of the baffle “seem” pointless – NO – they are there to bring the driver forward and avoid the “squeeze” at the back.

Therefore, this little guy may take time to cut. So I’m going to say that if you think you need a little front baffle to bring your driver forward – make this before you come.

The other way to fake it is to make a suprabaffle the same size as the front baffle - ie go double thickness. The hidden panel can be anything cheap, say chipboard. The front panel can be more decorative. You could - for arguments sake - use a real wood plank.

I managed to scrounge up some estimated/measured TS data for my Peak 8CX50's.
When I fed them to the BIB spreadsheet, I get ...

86" tall
20.5" deep
14.5"wide

wowsers! ... MONSTERS!

Hi Mick - your quite welcome, always good to see a new face. I have all the gear but another set of trestles would be handy to create another work surface, power drills/drivers/bits always useful.

If there's anyone contemplating joining in but needs a driver idea ... what about a HiVi M6N? It'd need a (super)tweeter, but you could still claim it as a BIB, I think. You might be able to use a (padded) piezo if you ran the M6N full range. Cost would be OK.

Well the BIBBIBB went off according to plan with 3 BIB's and a MLTL knocked up in one day, at one shed and by six guys: 4 builders and two helpers.
I built a pair with vintage (black version) FE103A SONY/Coral "Holey Baskets". (pictured)
Greenie built a pair using CSS FR125ST's.
Pete built a pair using Mark Audio CHR70's.
Steve built an MLTL using a pair of Mark Audio CHR170's.

Much noise, sawdust, cursing of mistakes... and fun.

A very productive day with much learned all round. 6 guys who now have a little better understanding of what the fuss is about with BIB's.
I think we all began with our BIB's overstuffed. Mine certainly was.

Now for few weeks of tuning ...

you'll have to keep us informed of your opinions as you get to know the sound of the speaker and tune it to perfection
