Grumpy
Bought a Toshiba USB HDD for my new TV today for easy TV recording - It records, but doesn't play the recorded content back. I then re-read the TV manual and a quick look on Google seems to suggest that only certain devices will work properly with the Pana TV's Has anyone had any experience with these USB HDD thingos on the Pana TV's please? Addicted to music
Not on a Pana, but on a Samsung you get a prompt to format the drive.
Kaynin
Yeah I've got 2 Pannies and use SD cards. I had to format the cards first, and you can't then use the storage device on another Pannie, they get formatted to work with the TV that formatted it... Yeah, that makes sense, can be annoying when you're in a position to watch a recorded FTA show and want to do it on the second TV. @Grumpy are you absolutely sure you recorded to the device? I know on mine when I chose to record a program I have to flick through the options of "USB HDD Rec"., "SD Card Rec." and "Reminder". I'll have a flick through my menus and see if there's a playback option hidden away somewhere...rather than reading the manual...
Kaynin
Have you gone into : MENU - SETUP - RECORDING SETUP - USB HDD SETUP? Other than this, I'm out of ideas and can't help

Hippy
An old PC put in a nice pretty slimline case with a TV tuner and a HDD can record a couple shows at once and let you watch a 3rd. If you throw in a wifi card or plug it into the home network you can then stream from a NAS or another computer or watch stuff on the internets like youtube. Wireless mouse and KB and away you go Id be happy to help you set up a HTPC box. Or for plug and play the WD media players with built in HDD are decently priced and work pretty good. In my experiences the plugging of a HDD or SD card into TVs can be a bit hit and miss.

Grumpy
All fixed. What I first bought was a Toshiba portable HDD, but what I needed was a HDD that plugged into the mains power. Bought a SEAGATE 2TB Expansion desktop Drive AND Georgina has already recorded with it - Simple!! no more "how do I switch the PVR recorder on"

It works fine. Edited August 7, 2015 by emesbee

The reason I'm asking is that the Samsung I have has 2 USB and only one USB slot is HDD enable that has the HDD and 1A label that means it's capable of driving a portable USB HDD without power. With my Samsung the Toshiba HDD you had would have worked fine with this USB with the 1A capability, however the other USB slot would not be able to power that portable HDD

mickj1
Hey Grumps - I suppose you'll need most of the 2TB space to record the Australians batting cheers mick

What I'm saying to you is that at least one of those USB ports should have had a 1A capability that is labelled HDD, this port should have been sufficient to drive up to a USB 3.0 2TB HDD with out the ones using external power. I can do that with my Samsung and so can my son's Samsung.

It's all new stuff to me, but I'm happy as can be with the set-up now.

Gee that's a real bummer @@Grumpy, and it's for a Pana as well, those portable HDD are so handy to have, and because there USB 3.0 you can transfer a rip CD in a matter of a minute or less depends on the content compared to USB 2.0This is what the back of a Samsung looks like so you can see what I'm referring to:

Was fairly lucky with the price, Officeworks had them going for $79 at the time. I compared them with HN and JB at the time, and they were the cheapest by far. Didn't last long at that price though.
