Hi Flemo I think a dac offers a better upgrade for the money, or similar upgrade for less money than upgrading a stand alone CDP. Hard to untangle the sound of my dac from my system. You said your dvd player is pretty long in the tooth so you shouldnt have to spend much to hear an improvement. The dac I'd suggest for an analogue lover is the Monica3 http://diyparadise.com/shop/index.ph...index&cPath=13 cheers B
Hi Bevan, sorry I had to cut and run yesterday but the house I was chasing was an investment property I was trying to obtain, but was outbid at the last minute, no biggie though plenty more out there! I was considering looking at an external dac for my dvd player. Would a dac be an improvement in sound as apposed to a quality stand alone cd player? After listening to your setup I just wondered how much your dac contributed to the overall sound of the system considering you run a valve amp which are generally considered a warm sound. Cheers, flemo.
Thanks for the offer. I've now replaced the SET amp with a SS and am far happier, so not so much need for a second amp now. I will be looking for a tube amp in the near future though, one with 16ohm taps, but the Accuphase wouldnt fit that bill, so lets see what others might be able to drag along. Thanks though. No turntable, hadnt thought about that as dont have phono stage, but would love to hear one in my system one day. I seems a bit much to ask of anyone to bring a TT along, but if it would interest you it would of course be great. Though I dont know if I want to know what I'm missing I should have thought of soft drinks too, I'll have a big bottle of coke too, will probably stick to it myself lest I blow up my new drivers with all the swapping of cables that will be going down. B.
Hi Bevan, got your PM and happy to attend your GTG. Did you get any offers for people bringing their amps to test with your speakers? I could bring my Accuphase if your interested? I don't drink so I'll just bring some softdrinks, did you weant me to bring anything else, also do you have a TT? Cheers, flemo.
Hi Flemo All good this side. Glad to hear you got something, B&W a pretty safe bet I reckon. I'm still enjoying the Bastanis but also recently got some Feastrex fullrangers to play around with. They do sound good, but I'm not sure yet if I'll keep them or the Bastanis. I posted something yesterday about a GTG in the upcoming weeks so if youre keen for a listen watch that space, or vistit any time. Still need to get the ply cut, hopefull this Thursday if Morgan Timber can do the major rips, then I'll do the rest at home or take the pieces to Fremanshed for routing etc. The PS1 is either the SCPH-1001 or 1002 depending if fron States or Europe. I'm not using mine now as the gain is too low for the new less sensitive drivers (with 2 watt amp on audiophile recording) so youre welcome to borrow it for a few weeks if you want to ceck them out. cheers Bevan
Hi Bevan, how are you? I haven't forgotten about listening to your system sometime, though I see you're building new speakers? I was going to build a set and spoke to Pat at WAR Audio, nice fella, but unreliable and difficult to contact, and have his undivided attention for than 5 minutes. I could see building through him would have frustrated the hell out of me so I picked up set of B&W683's, which should do me for a couple of years. You did mention before you were using a PS1 as a DCP transport, is it the SCPH-1001? Apparantly that is considered the best of them? How did you get on with getting your plywood cut? Cheers, flemo.
