Guys - what do you recon about running a Behringer A500 power amp to power a sub instead of going for a plate amp.

Price wise you get 500W in 8ohms bridged mono (0.01%THD)for $350 something that plate Dclass amps cannot give - at least not for that money.

Do you need 500W for your sub? Can your house cope?
I can't tell you if it would be a good sub amp or not, because I don't know what makes a good sub amp. In general Behringer have a reputation as making reasonably good pro gear at very cheap prices, with strong issues surrounding reliability. Sat next to audiophile gear, their stuff usually sounds bright, very bright and lean. Think, cheap mid 80s solid state. THis might not matter at all if you're only going to drive a sub with it, I don't know.

I expect it will do quite a good job, I am not a DIYer but I expect for a sub a good power supply and reserves would be important but a 500 watt amp should have plenty. Sub would rarely if ever pull 100watts

Behringer gives a lot of bang for buck but they use the cheapest components available to do it which is why they have a reliability issue, however, as dlite mentioned 500W is plenty for a home sub and it wouldn't be required to work very hard. Another option would be the Jaycar 350Wrms 4ohm Subwoofer amp with remote control. Retails at $329, i'm happy to offer it to Planet Audio members cheaper, PM me if interested.

I've been looking into these amps before. They can be had for just under $300 if you do some looking...
They definately have power on tap but the main issue I have for not getting one for sub duties would be because it does not come with a supplied xover, where as the plate amp does.
Also, i'm not entirely sure how the "volume" controls effect mono operation (as there's one per channel).

I use one to drive my IB subs - 230wpc each
Seems to have enough power for the IB config (and not too much to kill them if there is an especially dynamic and low set of thumps - it will clip before damaging them, by design)
It seems to have gone up from $270 3 mths ago. Great value. Love watching the leds whilst listening to good music too - crossover set to 60Hz usually, sometimes 44Hz
