View Full Version : Technical Madness

Now that Blu Ray has been selected as the 'standard' I heard From a friend of mine that lives in the US that the Japs are in the process of testing an Ultra Voilet disc player that offers 100 times the storage of BluRay . It seems that the UV Ray is so fine it has to be used in a partial vacuum so that particles in the air don't muck it up , but ,that problem will be overcome . Why don't they stick with a system to give the consumers a fair go! . This is just technical madness. AlanM .

Its becoming as bad as computers. You go out and buy the latest and greatest and before you even get it home and in the door there is some new must have upgrade.
Probably explains why vinyl is having such a resurgance. People are sick of guessing what is the new next big thing is and are revisiting older formats in the meantime.

have you also heard about the likes of CH-DVD?
apparently the Chinese only available version of HD-DVD. There was a thread on DTV about it but i got caught up amidst the confusion myself.

AlanM, people are making progress and you are against this? We will eventually outgrow our storage media. I remember going from 5.25" (maxed out at 512K), to 3.5" (maxed out at 1.44MB), to CDROM (700KMB) to DVDROM (4.7GB), and now I have a little USB stick that carries 4GB. When I performed computer backups, it used to take me half a day swapping 30-40 floppies in and out. Now I have a USB HDD and it does backups without me having to ask.
People are inventing new storage media - great! It can only be a good thing.

i hear you can even get 16GB USB sticks now.
Personally, i've found it amazing to grow up with such technology.
Hell, i even have a few of those 5.25" discs lying around from some old computer we still have, and i remember the 'Bouncing Babies' game being on one.

Have to agree with Keith - we probably have non idea of the applications that will be coming with the data storage available - sure know one really needs 3million songs stored on their PC but it may be a great for some other future applications.
It all seems so fast paced and one is tepmted to say slow down I want to get off but really we will probbaly need all these mega technologies to deal with the many problems we are facing - just hope it can be used for more than just running our houses automatically or getting X% gain in our stereo appreciation - you know world peace, poverty, climate change - hey who turned on supertramp - gee I love that song dreamer - nothing but a dreamer can you put your hands .....

Yes Keith I am against people taking progress to extreme . We Don't need any faster computers .We don't need Windows Vista .We dont need USB sticks . And we certainly dont need , we are a civilised world that has plenty . Just go into a supermarket and look at the choice of food we have , it is mind boggling . What I am saying is we have enough ---- we don't need more . We should appreciate what we have and not be greedy and say we want more . Maybe the world would be a better place if people would be happy with what they have got . Maybe people should be searching not for technology but for spiritual needs . This is my view on life Keith . Kind regards , AlanM .

Hehe, not sure if you are being serious or not  But if you are, I can see where you are coming from ... good on you if you have decided you are content with what you have and don't need any more. Maybe i'm the one who should be reconsidering my view on life, because I am a self confessed tech geek.

I'd have to agree that these are my feelings too. However, the search for technological progress IS a spiritual quest for some people. As the is the search for marketing success or wealth.
The 'failure' occurs when the rest of us give in to their kind of 'spirituality'.....
....and, quite frankly, all audio loonies like us should be aware that we are quite often part of the 'problem'.
It's bloody good fun, though!!!

I am a technology geek also, and love new gadgets, increased storage and more flexible / seamless connectivity but this thread made me stop and think "is it enough?".
Yes I guess it is, and we could live many, many future generations "as is".
But ..........
We wouldn't have what it is that we do now if it weren't for this evolution and progress, true?

Marc . We would probably be quite happy with a windup gramophone and a crystal set . When I was a kid it was before tv . We just listened to the radio for a couple of hours a week . The rest of the time we read books or played footy or cricket and sometimes had a yonnie fight(chucked stones) at other kids . Generally we did a lot more socialising with other kids than what kids do today . Sometimes when the parents had spare money we went to the flicks (local picture theatre) . Do we really need what we have now ? . Take away the supply of electricity and kids and most adults wouldn't know what to do with themselves -------I think adults could keep them selves amused coming to think about it---. Is it progress that we can end the World with a push of a Button . Kind regards Marc , Alan .

I grew up in the 80's with 8" disks, then 5-1/4" then 3-1/2".
By the time the 90's came, CDROM was all the rage, and then DVD.
There's one tech that never really made it into consumer usage - the 10 layer CDROM, much like the dual layer on a DVD, but the laser focus would read up to 10 layers - 5GB on a disc was new tech in the 80's, and gone by the time DVD in the 90's.
So now we have BD, and more to come - what happened to holographic discs? another one gone before it began?
I say "Bring it on, and may the densest, cheapest media storage win!"
