Have you noticed lately that people are starting to call a slightly modified lounge a home theatre . Where are the black ceilings , stage area ,heavy drapes , screen curtains , special seating , acoustic treatments , and most important dark rooms that create atmosphere .I'm afraid people have not gone to a theatre to soak up the important visual information ,It is sad .With a little bit of work they could turn their lounge in to a proper theatre .I suppose most people have no imagination Kind regards AlanM

 ....yes a makes it hard to read.

But your right, ideally a dedicated space would would be preferable.

Then there are those that make do with what they have available ,usually a not so forgiving wife.
l
Like mine, who would not appreciate a theme room.

Colours are like the smiley faces. They are all free, and I reckon its great.
But to answer the original question it might be real estate agents that are promoting the lounge room as a theatre.
You see an awful lot of it in advertising now, and not all these rooms are as theatrical as you might expect.

A projector, and a dark front wall is atleast a step in the right direction.

Or there is something wrong with your computers monitor.

I'd love to have a dedicated room, but alas it is not to be,so I compromise the lounge area to a heavily HT theme.

A Deep purple will do the job,not as hard to live with if you have flooring to match...I don't mean purple flooring....more of a dark blue.....easier to find the popcorn off.

Morning Alan,
Remember the old saying (different strokes) I feel sure there are many others like me who have absolutely no aspirations toward setting up a home theatre, it may seem sad to you but I wonder if the individuals who feel the need to go to this extreme are in fact the sad cases? give me a comfortable well furnished room with a good flat screen tv and a decent sound system and I am quite content, I dont feel the need to duplicate a theatre environment either to impress others or to make me feel like I am somewhere that I aint, lack of imagination? maybe it's the home theatre types who are lacking here and adopting the monkey see monkey do attitude, on the other hand if that's what rings you're bell go for it, just dont dump on those that have differing views (no pun intended)
PS, do you feel the need to sell ice creams and sweets outside the door and charge your guest's admission to complete the illusion?

What about an usher to tear your ticket and walk you down the isle.
What ever happened to intermission anyhow.

Ahh!, those were the days.

But your right Jon not every one needs or has a desire to have a theme room in their house.
But what ever floats your boat. :)

Don't forget the Jaffa's Joz, great things in the days of wooden floored cinema's sloping toward the screen, a few Jaffas on the floor created mayhem.

I think they've now been replaced by mobile phones

Can't believe you'd pay for a movie ticket and sit there talking on the phone

He he ... very good..... no they just let them ring while your trying to watch a movie, meaning it's peoples phones ringing that causes mayhem in cinemas now rather than jaffas rolling down the aisle.

I was reeding the other day that you can get mobile phone jamers!!
Maybe it would be just the thing to take to the pictures??
Maybe even to keep the wife off the air??

Back to the room though, I am in the middle of building a new house and will have my own listening / HT room, not very big but will do the job!(I hope) Even ordered it with two doors so I can pretend its the real thing!
Cheers

Its a real estate "thing".

Home "theatres" are the in thing to have at the moment - much like "outdoor rooms".

In much the same way as any area with a few pavers and a BBQ is called an "outdoor room", any spare room slightly larger than a bedroom that can be closed off (or in many cases now not even closed off) which has ample room to put a "large" TV in is marketed as a "Home theatre".

My girlfriend and I are looking at buying houses at the moment and we had a look at a few display homes when we got sick of looking at established properties (ugh display homes and estates are not for me!) and nearly any home larger than 30sq had a "home theatre" - some of the builders even throwing in a "FREE" home "theatre" in a box packages.

So its just another selling point so to speak - much like a "renovaters delight" puts a happy spin on a tired house, "home theatre" puts a different spin on "lounge room" - or useless room that would other wise go to waste...

Oh and yes not every one wants a dedicated home theatre - I know I dont in this first house. Sure I do want a decent TV 42" or so LCD or Plasma would be nice (though I dont think my budgets going to go that far unfortunately!) But I dont want to go to the extent of completely blacking out the room to give that "real theatre" feel

JON . I have no inspirations to setting up a swimming pool . and i certainly would not knock someone for doing so . If they are happy and content having a swim in their bath , good on them . But , they should not call a bath a swimming pool . Most people put in pools for thier families enjoyment not the visitors . Some people have the wrong idea of a home theatre . If some people want to create the illusion of having a commercial theatre in their home good on them . why knock them??? . Kind regards Jon , AlanM.
