Hi all,
Well, Friday night with Black Sabbath and Ronnie James Dio was a triumphant musical event! We came in about half way through the support bands set, Down, featuring members of Pantera, COC and Eyehategod. Initially they sounded great but after a couple of numbers I felt that they just went through the motions. Phil from Pantera on vocals was consistently flat and the band really didn't do much to lift things. The last couple of songs were great but that didn't suppress the disappointment of seeing what is an all-star band at their laziest. However, when the might Sab's came on stage, everything changed. here was a bunch of middle aged (or even elderly) men, playing loud, heavy rock the way it should be done. Dio is masterful. This little old man in his mid 60's sang the pants off the Phil Anselmo. There was no swearing during the between song banter, he almost sounded like a Vegas lounge singer, announcing the next tune very politely. But, when he sang he rocked and the Vegas feel was blown to smithereens. Although he couldn't manage the highest notes, Dio's voice is still one of the most powerful and tuneful in rock. he's magnificent. What do you say about Tony Iommi? He is simply an icon of heavy metal. His playing is awesome. (a word I hate but applicable here).
Geezer on bass and Vinnie Appice on drums laid down their solid foundations like the pro's that they are so that Tony and Dio could get on with what they do best. Short of seeing the original line-up, this was a concert made in Heaven (and Hell)!
Cheers

Reads like a fantastic night!
Sadly I missed Black Sabbath in SA (and Down, who I also really like). I hope a concert DVD will be released in the near future.
As for Ronnie James Dio, I think he's still the benchmark in hard rock/heavy metal. It is amazing that a man in his mid/late 60's can still belt out the tunes with gusto unmatched by guys a third his age.
RJD longevity reminds me of another great singer Tom Jones who just happens to be another gent in his 60's who can still sing amazingly well.
I wonder how Ozzy would perform with Iommi & co nowadays :p
As for Down's performance, very disappointing to read they put on a mediocre show. Not surprised at Phil sounding flat; his vocals were awful for the most part after the release of "The Great Southern Trendkill" album when still frontman for Pantera. Phil also sounded god awful on the "Official Live - 101 Proof" album too - the vocals Anselmo provides is a legacy of too many drugs & too much alcohol.
Cheers.

Glad you liked the concert unclemack. I loved Ronnie James Dio's vocals when he was with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. A vocal powerhouse for sure and still rockin' in mid 60's. Hope for us all.

 Wow!
I thought I'd be a lonely Sabbath fan on "this" forum  but this is great, I think I have just about every Sabbath album to date  . While I like Ronnie and Vinnie I will always prefer Ozzy's voice and Bill ward on drums (who came from a jazz background incidently) there is just something magical when the original band members play together. I dont think there are many pioneers like these guy's anymore these days unfortunately :( . I don't think there's anything like seeing great (older) bands re-grouping and playing as though they had never left the stage. I remember when I was a teenager I played drums in a band and we played "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath at a talent quest (lol  ) the parents and teachers were totally mortified.
I think there should be a favourite older bands that members have seen recently thread (if it hasn't already be done that is).
Cheers Steve  .

Hi rrobie
Had a quick Google and read Ronnie James Dio (born Ronald James Padavona) on 10 July 1942. Can still sing with the best rockars even at age 65.

The song is off their very first self titled album it's called "Black Sabbath", just a bit of trivia -before they were "Black Sabbath" they called themselves "Earth" without a great deal of success until Ozzy Ozbourne saw an advertisement for a Boris Karlof film called "Black Sabbath" so then the legend began.
I also love one of Ozzy's famous quotes to the media - Ozzy do you have a drinking problem? Yes I only have one mouth  lol.
P.S - If anyone would like any errr..... copies of any albums just PM or email me
Cheers Steve.

Austeve,
I know what you mean about the original line-up. I saw them at festering Hall in Melb about '73 and it was magic. The heaven and Hell line-up was great but different. I never got into post-Ozzy Sabbath but this has convinced me of the validity of the Iommi/Dio era.
I doubt that we'll ever see Ozzy fronting again in Australia but it would be something to behold. Saw Ozzy in the late nineties when he toured and he was still fantastic.
If there are any Vinylphile/ Sabbath fans then be glad because pretty much all the original line-up albums have been re-released with new mastering on new heavy (pun intended) vinyl. I have a few and they sound excellent. Far better than the remastered CD's.
Speaking of reunions, Van Halen look to be getting together as well. Completely different flavour to Sabbath but would love to see Diamond dave and Eddie rockin' out again.
Cheers

Cheers and thank's Steve.

Steve,
I get mine from this mob (http://www.lpcdreissues.com/) however if you have any retailers local to you that sell new vinyl then they would be able to get them for you.
The guy at the above website is great to deal with, they are based in Greece and have a fantastic range of early, Eurpopean and prog metal on vinyl...
