Has anyone any experience with or own the Thor PS10? I was at the Wollongong Home Show today and they had a special for $1199 and $149 for the A12 power board.

Hi chaddy. I have one. It is ok. I struggle to hear any sonic improvement, as it does take some time to remove and re-plug each of the power cords. Probably more a piece of mind thing.

Not a bad price you saw. Its RRP is $1500 including the rather cheaply made power board.

A few months back I exchanged some e-mails with them in an attempt to find out some relatively basic technical info on their $300 power board. They replied that they didn't know this technical info so I asked them to refer the questions to their technical staff. They did so and replied that their technical staff didn't know this info either. It was basic info that is published by many other manufacturers. This left me with a complete lack of confidence in Thor and their products. I don't know the background behind Thor but if they can't find out the most simple technical info on their products it makes me wonder whether they design their own products or just re-badge someone else's. And, if this is the case, is the product really optimised for use with high end audio components?

What kind of power supply is it? Is it a power conditioner or an AC regenerator?

I have one of these and I am pretty sure it is not an AC regenerator. I say this because devices attached through it are still affected by power drains on the house circuit eg. fridge compressor coming on and off periodically. I don't know if thats definitive proof but I was under the impression that an AC regenerator would avoid this. I also had trouble finding out technical info before buying, in the end I spoke to someone at Thor who told me the PS10 was based on one of the UPS's they also made. I assume the UPS is not online and so does not regenerate. There are two UPS's of similar KVA to the PS10, the 2KVA and the 2.2KVA. The 2.2KVA doesn't mention it is an online unit while the 2KVA does.
The PS10 appears to be a voltage regulator, line conditioner and surge protector.

Cheers,
Rift.

PS. If you shop around and haggle a bit, it may be possible to get the unit at +/- $1000.

Thanks for the info guys. I think from a consumer point of view this power management has alot of smoke and mirrors.

I find these sorts of things very hard to swallow, especially at these sorts of prices.
I think I'm a bit of a sceptic at the best of times when it comes to A/V and I put cable, mains filters, and other similar accessories, (at those prices), into the, "only if I had more money than sense" , category. If I could afford to throw a product away and have a laugh at myself I too would try these things, probably. I don't mean any offence to you enthusiasts who have gone down this road but that is my opinion.

I don't know. Since I got new speakers I get a click when I turn on the CD player, and that is whether the CD player is selected on the amp or not. I think some power conditioning is probably a good idea, but at $1k, they have to be joking. I think I'll get something when I get a new amp but I won't spend that much. I find the cable business a bit funny too, I am forced to use the old cables for the speakers at the moment as the new ones blow a fuse on the amp but hopefully I can use the Osborn cables with a new amp. I'll spend $50 on interconnects but I'm a bit sceptical when they go higher than that. The old thick cables I use for the CD player seem to have lasted a long time at least.

I have Thor 10 for a while and using it for a source equipment CD,DVD,PREAMP.I have find if I used it for a power amps it does loss some of it’s grip and dynamic (sorry for mine expression) I did not find any substantial change in the sound but I’m intend to keep it. What I did find to be working though is Line balance from DBA (Australian base) I have line balance 3000W form DBA and it does work at least with mine setup. I did also have the DBA 300 which was meant to be for source equipment it was better than THOR no doubt but I have return it as it was too noisy

not so long ago i did a comparIson between the thor ps10 and the belkin pf 40 and found the belkin to be a better choice in my system .
i would also like to suggest if you are using a dba line filter or the belkiin pure av filters , it would worth it to look into some Australian made power cables such as R.K.CABLE the website is www.rkcable.com.au

I found the thor ps 10 to be to restrictive on my system i found that the system was lacking in bass and not as open sounnding and the midrarange was less defined .

As above i am using the belkin pure av pf40 and find it to be very good and i would have to say it is better choice than the ps10 . i found my system to be more open and smoother and with the addition of shielded power cables i also found an improvement in my sytem especially in the sytem being more open and more detailed and the bass more defined
i can recommend the pure av pf40

I found this thread with more details on the PF40 a few months ago.
