View Full Version : Desperate for toast

Bloody hell. The toaster carked it again. Thirteen months old. Took it apart, surprised to find it was NOT the electronics like the last toaster. This time the hinges on the relay catch that hold down the spring that stop it flying up (got it?).

In desperation have ordered a Dualit Vario toaster. Haahaa! I'll fix their little red wagon, those toaster destroyers.

HAA HAA! I WILL WINNNN!!!!!

For that price it better bloody well drip single malt Scotch. The only reason I bought it.

It also comes with reclining seats and a built in folding barbeque and umbrella.

And a French maid with a pretty frilly apron.

I fiddled, and I fiddled. Put in another spring. Stuck pads behind the hinges. Some foam wedged against the armature to give it a bit of assistance as the relay was still getting energised.

Then chucked the fricking thing over the fence. At least it had the decency to hit that bloody barking dog, so it still had some goodness left in it.

In my 30 minutes research I found that there is a thing called the iToaster. Turns on and off via the internet.

Also a toaster that browns the pattern of the current weather map. Unfortunately only for England, so pretty boring weather, otherwise I would have purchased it in a snap.

I understand that SGR are picking up on this initiative. Watch out for Octogon toast at Norpus'!

The Mool Hood Toaster is a toaster that pulls your bread through like an MRI machine, as opposed to usual toasting methods where the bread sits still. Just hope the moving mechanism doesn't break down halfway through, or you'll have an unreachable piece of bread catching fire in the middle of the toaster you're frantically hitting with a hammer to shut off. And sure, you could probably just unplug it, but that wouldn't be nearly as dramatic and exciting.

I know there are fancy toasters out there, but essentially most toasters work in the same way, whether you paid $10 for your little machine or $300. You set the timer, put the slice of bread in, and it pops out when done. If it''s not quite toasty enough, you put it back in. If it''s burned and inedible, you throw it out and start over with a new piece of bread.

But here''s a concept product that not only takes the guess work out of toasting,
but also turns something common into a bit of visual interest for your kitchen. The
Transparent Toaster toasts your bread or pastry (using "heating glass technology," whatever that is) in plain view so you can watch it to be sure it comes out just right

Via Ananova (but no information about the designer or prospects for making this into a commercial product). This tiip comes from Emily.

The Note Toaster, designed by Sasha Tseng, is a toaster that will burn reminders into your breakfast. Using a stylus, you write on the top, and then the toaster heats your bread while burning the message in. No word of how the damn thing actually works, which means it probably doesn't, or is still conceptual. If I had to guess I'd say there is a laser involved, or maybe black magic/sorcery. I like it though, and want one. I even have my first message ready. "Honey, stop eating my damn bread and do the freaking dishes. Love, me."

If IBM made toasters...
They would want one big toaster where people bring bread to be submitted for
overnight toasting. IBM would claim a worldwide market for five, maybe six
toasters.

If Xerox made toasters...
You could toast one-sided or double-sided. Successive slices would get
lighter and lighter. The toaster would jam your bread for you.

If Radio Shack made toasters...
The staff would sell you a toaster, but not know anything about it. Or you
could buy all the parts to build your own toaster.

If Hewlett-Packard made toasters...
They would market the Reverse Polish Toaster, which takes in toast and gives
you regular bread.

If Sony made toasters...
The Toast Man, which would be barely larger than the single piece of bread it
is meant to toast, can be conveniently attached to your belt.

And, of course:
If Microsoft made toasters... Every time you bought a loaf of bread, you
would have to buy a toaster. You wouldn't have to take the toaster, but
you'd still have to pay for it anyway.

Toaster '07 would weigh 15,000 pounds (hence requiring a reinforced steel
countertop), draw enough electricity to power a small city, take up 95% of
the space in your kitchen, would claim to be the first toaster that lets you
control how light or dark you want your toast to be, and would secretly
interrogate your other appliances to find out who made them.

Everyone would hate Microsoft toasters, but nonetheless would buy them since
most of the good bread only works with their toasters.

Ah, that was a classic. However I remember that it did have a wekness. The little actuating lever on left (I think) slice that went down when a piece of toast was inserted and then lowered the tray could get out of kilter.

I remember as a kid putting a slice of toast in and bouncing it up and down like on a trampoline until that lever did it bit. Of course by then the toaster was many years old, however that strategy kept it going for a few more.

Memories...bet the kids today will never chat about their Russell Hobbs when they are over 50.

Very common problem - and the one most likely to contribute to their dumping. The thing is...it's a really easy problem to fix. There's a tiny set screw in the base (under the central chassis core) to adjust the tension on the actuating lever. Do that properly and the problem just disappears.

With respect to Brumby's comment......I can bring this back into hi-fi relevance.

I have a bare chassis of one of these Sunbeam toasters with rather lovely mustard coloured ends (like this one). The bimetal switch failed and the heater wires had corroded into failure to so I stripped it and (until recently) used it in the kitchen to manage our collection of wooden spoons. A new kitchen has made it redundant...

And I've been thinking that it is crying out for a valve amplifier conversion. Slide control will make an excellent volume lever. Power switch would be on the lead. Valve(s) out the top. Signal in and out through gaps in the baseplate.

Any suggestions as to ideal/simple valve amp designs that I can adapt?

getting alittle off topic from toasters but keeping with your theme of modifying kithcen whitegoosds into stereo equipment - I always see old fridges at the dump - often thought if you got a matching pair you could make a wiked pair of speakers (even if for outdoor use). Thought the insulation size and sturdiness would be pretty good - sleect the correct drivesr - make them active and put the amps down where the motor normally is - bingo home made big end speakers!!!!

Nice work Grumpy. Actually I have made lots of bread (the wheat variety, not the folding stuff) in the past, although not the last 10 or so years.

Must do that again...you are right, it really does make a difference.

Although good bread is now much more readily available than it was in the old days, when you pretty much had to go to a delicatessen to get it. A REAL delicatessen, like the one my parents had in Acland St, not one of those silly things called a deli at one end of a supermarket.

I know you have been waiting for an update, right?

I have been so pleased by the Dualit we purchased that we decided to get another.

They are both 4 slotters, the first one with a white centre section and stainless steel ends, the second one all stainless steel to go in the holiday house and fit in with the rest of that kitchen's decor.

I am also pleased to report that Mrs Mustud has nearly worked out how to use a Dualit. She has also worked out how hot these things get and no longer has it under the wooden ledge when it is on. I will get around to replacing the burnt section of the ledge one day.

For the cost conscious, discovered that I could save about $170 on the best price Australian price (yes, that is not the total cost, just the saving) by buying online from the U.K. And that is after postage and purchasing an Aussie 3 pin plug to put on the end. By the way, the original Dualit U.K. plug is a wonderful product in its own right, beautifuly made and fitted with a 13 amp fuse. Much more impressive than the plug on the Aussie retail version (although that is also quite solid).

So, anyone want pics?

I am wondering if Kimber make a cable for the Dualit. Must check with TonyC. Always worth investigating these things, and mods can be surprisingly rewarding.

:)
